Albany Great Danes History
The university launched their first basketball team in 1909-10 but they did not appointed any official head coach. They played three seasons without coach but failed to post any winning season. Arch B. Swaim was appointed the first head coach in 1912-13 season, who led the team to an amazing 7-3 record, along .700 winning percentage. The Albany showed further improvement in the following season by posting a 10-3 record, a .769 winning percentage. During the tenure of Arch B. Swaim from 1913–1916, the Albany won 26 games against 10 losses. Another wave of success came under the coaching period of Richard Sauers, who led the team from 1955 to 1987 and 1988 to 1997, skipping one season in between. Under his watch, the Albany gave eleven NCAA and four NAIA post-season tournament appearances. He roamed the sidelines of the team for 41 seasons and compiled a outstanding 702-330 record, crossing his 700 win mark after the Albany defeated the University of Bridgeport with 89-71 record. The 2006 season brought success to the team, as they made it to the NCAA Tournament and won the Conference Tournament and conference regular season championship. The Albany Great Danes play their home games at SEFCU Arena.
