BYU Cougars History
The BYU Cougars were established in 1922. They went 65–51–12 between 1928–1942 season. One of the school's finest seasons came in 1932, they made a 8-1 record and outscored their competitors with 188-50. During this season, the BYU defeated the Utes for the first time. After some disappointing seasons, Hal Kopp became the head coach of the BYU Cougars. He led the team to its back-to-back winning seasons in 1957 and 1958. Eldon "The Phantom" Fortie was honored as the school's first All-American as a running back in 1961. After Kopp, Tommy Hudspeth appointed as the head coach of the Cougars. He led the team to their first conference championship with a record of 6-4. Coach Hudspeth gave the team its 3 winning seasons between 1965 and 1967 before his retirement in 1972 and finished with a record of 39–42–1. The 1984 season was another successful season of the team. They went 12-0-0 and defeated the Pitt with 20-14. Later, the team defeated the Michigan by a score of 24-17 in the Holiday Bowl. The BYU was declared NCAA Division I-A national champions with 24-game winning streak. Since their formation, the BYU Cougars have won 23 conference titles. The team play their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
