California Golden Bears History
The California Golden Bears came into existence in 1907 and began full conference play in 1915. The 1920s era was the golden period of the team as they won 6 conference titles under coaches E.H. Wright and Nibs Price. Nibs Price coached the team for 30 years from 1924 to 1954 and they gave phenomenal performance under his watch. He brought 3 conference titles in the 1930s and 1940s, many single season winning records, compiling a total 449-294 record. The team had another period of considerate success under the head coach Pete Newell, who roamed in the sidelines of Golden Bears for 5 years, from 1955 to 1960. He brought four out of five conference titles during his tenure. One of the brightest moments came in 1959, when they made it to the NCAA Tournament and won the NCAA title. In 1986 season, they defeated the UCLA by the score of 75–67 and ended a 25-year, 52 game losing streak to the Bruins. Another wave of success came in 1990s as they qualified for the NCAA tournament five times and defeated the Clemson in 1999 with 61-60 record to win the National Invitation Tournament. The California Golden Bears play their home games at Haas Pavilion.
