The Clemson Tigers entered into the world of football in 1896. The team is one of the founding members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). They played their first match against the Furman. John Heisman coached the Tigers in 1900 and the team finished the season with 6-0 and remained undefeated. Heisman stayed with the team for 4 years and compiled a record of 19–3–2, a .833 percentage. This turned out to be the best record posted by the Heisman in his football history. Jess Neely became the head coach of the team in 1931. Neely led the Tigers to a 43-35-7 record during his stay. In the final season with the team, the Tigers went 9-1 and finished second to Duke in the Southern Conference. The Tigers got their first bowl victory by defeating nationally ranked Boston College with 6-3 in the 1940 Cotton Bowl Classic. Frank Howard became the head coach of the team after Neely. During his 30 years with the team, Howard compiled a 165–118–12 record, a 3–3 bowl record, won two Southern Conference championships, and six ACC championships. With 18 total conference titles, Clemson holds the most conference titles of any school at 14. The Clemson Tigers play home games at Memorial Stadium.
