Kentucky Wildcats History
The Kentucky Wildcats recorded their official participation in basketball in 1902, defeating Georgetown College by the score of 15-6 in their first game. But they were not very competitive during their initial years till E.R. Sweetland was appointed as the head coach. Under his watch, they went 5-4 in his first season with them and only after three seasons, they posted their first ever undefeated season with 9-0 record. Another wave of success came under the coaching period of George Buchheit as he led them to their first ever Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament in 1921 season by beating the heavily favored Georgia Bulldogs. C.O. Applegran was hired as the next head coach who took them to 13-8 record in 1925 season. In the following season, they posted 15-3 record under coach Ray Eklund. Owing to their outstanding performance, they became the favorite team of fans in that era. The Wildcats have played in 52 NCAA tournaments, 155 NCAA tournament games and have a NCAA record of 43 Sweet Sixteen appearances. Also they ranks second to UCLA with 7 NCAA championships. They play their home games at Rupp Arena, which can hold up to 23,500 people at maximum capacity.
