Maryland Terrapins History
The Maryland Terrapins were founded in 1892. They posted a perfect record of 6–0 in 1893 season. Jim Tatum was hired in 1947 as the head coach of the Terrapins and became the most successful coach in the history. The team won two national championships and three conference championships during his tenure. Further, the terrapins gave three perfect seasons and came at six top-20 final rankings. Along with this, the team made to the bowl game five times under Tatum. The Maryland Terrapins started finishing each and every season with a winning record. In 1949 season, the terrapins gave the bowl game appearance. They faced 20th-ranked Missouri and defeated them with 20–7. The Terrapins finished the season ranked 14th by the Associated Press. In the following season, the team started at the 15th place. They defeated the Navy by a score of 35–21. The Terrapins defeated two 11th-ranked teams; Mississippi and Alabama with 38–0 and 21–0. By doing so, they won the ACC co-championship alongside Duke. Since the formation of the team, they had given 24 bowl game appearances and have won 9 national championships and NCAA-recognized national championship with two Southern Conference championships. The team play their home games at Byrd Stadium.
