New Mexico Lobos History
The New Mexico Lobos came into existence in 1892. Ted Shipkey became the head coach of the team in 1937. In the following year, the Lobos played in BIAA conference and set a record of 8-3. The New Mexico Lobos played the Sun Bowl game in on January 2, 1939, against Utah but unfortunately lost the game. They gave another Sun Bowl game appearance in January 1, 1946. The team defeated the Denver Pioneers by a score of 34-24. In the following year, the team faced the Montana State in Harbor Bowl on January 1. The game resulted into a tie with 13-13. On December 9, 1961, the team battled with Western Michigan in Aviation Bowl. The Lobos defeated the Michigan with 28-12. Bill Weeks was the coach of the team, when they played in WAC conference in 1962. He led the team to 7-2-1 record. In the following season, the team went 6-4 in the WAC conference. The members of Lobos football team are honored each year at the Lobos Annual Football Awards Banquet. The New Mexico Lobos play their home games at University Stadium. It is located on the south campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
