Texas Tech Red Raiders History
The Texas Tech Red Raiders were established in 1925. From 1925 to 1936, they were referred to as the Matadors. The team joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1932. The name of the team was replaced with Red Raiders officially in 1937. Later that year, the Raiders joined the first conference championship. The team got an invitation to the Sun Bowl game. The match was played on January 1, 1938. The Raiders faced the West Virginia Mountaineers but unfortunately lost the game with 7-6. The team got its first postseason win in the 1953 Sun Bowl. The Texas Tech Red Raiders won eight conference championships and one co-championship. They left the Border Conference and became the member of the Southwest Conference (SWC) in 1956. The team earned its full SWC membership and began official conference play in 1960. After few mediocre seasons, the team won the conference co-championships in 1976 and 1994 season. When the SWC got dissolved, the university was invited to become a charter member in the South Division of the Big 12 Conference. The team posted a winning record every year since the conference's formation but they gave their first losing season in 2011. The Texas Tech Red Raiders play their home games at Jones AT&T Stadium.
