The Utah Utes came into existence in 1892. In their first year, the team won one and lost two games. The Utah played their first game against another college (Utah Agricultural College) but unfortunately lost the game. The team hired Joe Maddoc as the head coach of the team in 1904. Under his guidance, the team was able to experience the glorious phase of success. During his six seasons, the team posted a record of 28–9–1 (.750). Later, Fred Bennion was appointed as the head coach of the team during 1910 to 1913. He finished with a record of 16–8–3 (.648) during his four seasons. Ike Armstrong was hired as the head coach of the team. He proved to be the most successful coach for the team. Under him, the Utah won thirteen conference championships, including six in a row from 1928 to 1933 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He led the team to three undefeated and untied seasons (1926, 1929 and 1930). Armstrong gave two more undefeated seasons (1928 and 1941) but they were tied. After Armstrong, McBride brought more wins for the team. He compiled a record of 88–63 (.583). The team has won 24 conference titles since their formation. The Utah Utes play their home games at Rice–Eccles Stadium.
