Wyoming Cowboys History
The Wyoming Cowboys were established in 1892. Fred Hess was appointed as the head coach of the team in 893. The team went 1-0. They faced and defeated the Cheyenne HS on February 22 by a score of 14-0. In the following season, the team went 3-0. The Wyoming Cowboys defeated the Northern Colorado 34-0 and went 1-01 in 1895 season. Mike Dirks was recognized as one of the star players of the team. He was selected as an All-American and All-Western Athletic Conference performer. He became the co-captain of the team in 1967. Dirks led the Cowboys to a 10-1 record and berth in the 1968 Sugar Bowl. Jim Kiick became the leading rusher during his three 1965-67 season. He was the first player ever to earn first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors three times. Kiick has also co captained the team as the senior. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1966 Sun Bowl victory over Florida State. He ran 25 times for 135 yards and made two touchdowns, catching four passes for 42 yards. The Wyoming Cowboys have won 15 conference titles since their formation. The team play their home games at War Memorial Stadium.
