Since the team’s first season in 1892, the Crimson Tide has been one of the most successful programs in the nation. In November 1892, the team played its first game, winning 56-0, which started their storied tradition of winning. Under Wallace Wade, who coached from 1923-1930, the team went 61-13-4, including four conference championships, and three national titles. Wade was the first of Alabama’s coaches to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. After Wade left, Frank Thomas came in, and during his tenure, compiled a record of 115-24-7, winning four conference championships and two national titles, as well as SEC Coach of the Year in 1945. The team then went through a period of relative mediocrity before Paul “Bear” Bryant came aboard as coach. From 1958 through 1982, Bryant coached the Crimson Tide to a 232-46-9 record, winning 13 conference championships and six national titles, winning consecutive national championships twice in 1964 and 1965, and again in 1978 and 1979. Alabama’s next national championship came under the direction of Gene Stallings who led the Crimson Tide to a title in 1992.
Overall, the Crimson Tide has compiled a 814-320-43 record, including 14 national titles. 103 Alabama players have been named as first-team All-Americans. Throughout their history, the team has featured one player that was selected as a Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram in 2009. The team has featured 305 players that have been selected in the NFL Draft, including one, Joe Namath, who was selected first overall. The Crimson Tide has three main rivals, LSU, Tennessee, and most importantly, their in-state foe, Auburn. Annually, the “Iron Bowl,” a game, which has been played since 1893, has been won 41 times by Alabama.
