The Auburn Tigers football team is a Division I program for Auburn University. The team is located in Auburn, Alabama and plays their home games at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Jordan-Hare Stadium has a capacity of 87,451 and opened in 1939. The team plays in the Southeastern Conference, known as the SEC, and is currently coached by Gene Chizik. In Chizik’s first three seasons as head coach, he has led the team to a 30-10 record including a perfect 14-0 season en route to the BCS National Championship Game, where they defeated the Oregon Ducks 22-19 in 2011. Under Chizik, the team is 3-0 in bowl games.
Since their first season in 1892, Auburn has worked hard to not be overshadowed by the University of Alabama, and has compiled an impressive record on their own. Throughout their history, the team has pieced together a 718-405-47 record, including an astounding 22-13-2 record in bowl games. After beginning as an Independent, the team joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1895. Once there, the team won three conference championships before winning one in the Southern Conference. In 1933, the team joined the SEC, where they have won seven conference championships, including four under Pat Dye, and most recently in 2010. In 1957, under Ralph “Shug” Jordan, the team won a national title after compiling a perfect 10-0 record; however, they were barred from postseason play due to probation, but were still named #1 at the end of the season by the AP. In 2010, the team won their second and most recent national title. The team has finished undefeated seven times. The team has featured 66 consensus All-Americans and three Heisman Trophy winners, Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and most recently Cam Newton in 2010.
The Tigers play three main rivalry games each year, games against the LSU Tigers in the “Tiger Bowl,” the Georgia Bulldogs in the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry,” and none more important than the “Iron Bowl” against in-state foe the Alabama Crimson Tide. LSU leads the “Tiger Bowl” 25-20-1 in a series that dates back to 1901. Since 1892, these two teams have faced off 115 times, with Auburn holding a narrow 54-53-8 lead. Starting in 1893, the in-state rivals Auburn and Alabama have faced off 76 times, with the Crimson Tide holding a 41-34-1 lead, with Alabama winning the most recent matchup.
