Binghamton Bearcats History
The Binghamton Bearcats are also one of the top state academic institutions in New York. They started playing basketball in 1946 and were referred to as the Colonials till 1998. Earlier, the Bearcats were counted as the Division III program but they moved up to Division II in 1998 and finally came in Division I in 2001. After moving to Division I, they defeated the ACC member, University of Miami in 2006, which turned out to be the biggest non-conference win of the team. They gave a mediocre performance in 2007 season under the head coach Al Walker. He got replaced by Kevin Broadus for the 2008 season. This move prove to be successful for the Binghamton Bearcats. In the second year of Kevin as the head coach, the school witnessed the most glorious period. They defeated the UMBC by the score of 61–51 in the America East Tournament Championship Game. By doing so, they made it their debut in the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a 15th seed, winning their first regular season conference title in school history. The Binghamton Bearcats play their home games at Binghamton University Events Center, which can hold up to 5,322 people at maximum capacity.
