California Golden Bears History
The California Golden Bears came into existence in 1886. The Bears became the serious contenders in 1920s. They went 50 straight games without a defeat from 1920 to 1925. The Golden Bears set a record of 46 wins and 4 ties. Owing to their outstanding performance, people started calling them "The Wonder Teams,” The Cal won four Pacific Coast Conference championships and made three trips to the Rose Bowl during this decade. They entered the 1930s riding on success. The Golden Bears won PCC championship three times and appearing in the 1938 Rose Bowl, in which they defeated Alabama 13-0 with two touchdowns scored by player, Vic Bottari. After playing few mediocre seasons, Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf became the head coach in 1947. During 1947-1950 seasons, they won 33 consecutive regular season games, earning three PCC championships and three Rose Bowl berths. During Waldorf tenure, the team a record of 67-32-4. Jeff Tedford became the head coach of the team after September 11, 2001 attacks. Under his leadership as head coach, the team posted eight consecutive winning seasons. Since their founding, the Golden Bears have won 14 conference titles. The California Golden Bears play their home games at California Memorial Stadium.
