When rock legend Alice Cooper first hit the rock music scene with his Alice Cooper band in 1960; the music industry had never heard a sound quite like Cooper’s. Born Vincent Furnier; the singer didn’t take on the Alice Cooper name until he broke away from his band the Alice Cooper band in 1975 and took the group’s name on as his own. The rock singer and his band first achieved mainstream success in 1971, with their hit album Love It to Death. The record featured songs such as “I’m Eighteen” and “School’s Out.” The group followed this record with their most successful album Billion Dollar Babies; which was released in 1973.
Even though the band saw great success; Vincent Furnier started his solo career as Alice Cooper with his solo concept album, Welcome to My Nightmare. Since then the singer has released 19 albums as a solo artist and 26 albums in total. Over his expansive career in the music industry, the singer and rocker has experimented with influences from many different styles of rock music to help keep his music fresh. However, the singer has always stayed true to the hard rock sound that first made him famous.
The rock legend is known for shaping the look and sound of heavy metal that became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2011, the original Alice Cooper band was collectively inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Although Cooper is known for his rock legend status; one of the biggest things the singer is known for is for his eccentric and over-the-top personality. The performer’s personality has not only shaped his personal life but can be seen in his notorious stage performances.
With live concerts that are often designed to shock and thrill and have been called “rock n’ roll vaudeville,” Cooper is always looking to keep audiences on their toes with his concerts. Alice Cooper shows have been known for have a horror movie element to them and feature live boa constrictors, guillotines, electric chairs, over the top props and lighting and of course, plenty of fake blood. His showmanship and stage presence is often regarded as being responsible for the introduction of horror into rock n’ roll. Cooper continues this tradition of over-the-top performances during his 2012 shows that include appearances at festivals like Bonaroo and individual concerts around the country.
