Having reached the pinnacle of the country music scene Brooks' began to take up other interests. He unsuccessfully tried out for baseballs San Diego Padres in 1998, and embarked on the failed Chris Gaines Project, which flopped in late 1999. His personal life also began to unravel as he announced plans to divorce his wife, Sandy, in October of 2000. He would also officially announce his retirement from recording and performing two weeks later.
In 2005, Garth Brooks was getting to itch to return to the spotlight. He issued The Limited Series, a six-CD box set that sold more than 500,000 copies on the issue date alone and in 2007; Brooks' released a new boxed set called The Ultimate Hits that achieved 5x Platinum certification. In January of 2008, Garth Brooks performed five shows at Staples Center in Los Angeles in order to benefit victims of the California Wildfires.
