Known by many of the first woman of rap music, Lil Kim, has had a long and successful career in the rap and R&B music. When the artist first emerged on the rap music scene, audiences around the world had yet to see a female rapper of her calibre. Although many thought that Lil Kim had much to prove being a female in a male dominated industry, she proved that she had the raw musical talent and star power to rise to the top of the rap music world.
Lil Kim began her career as part of the Brooklyn based rap group title Junior M.A.F.I.A.; which was heavily promoted by famous rapper B.I.G. Although the group only released one album together, they had three hit singles; all off which had substantial char success on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. After a year with the band, Lil Kim began making a name for herself by making guest appearances on different albums while she recorded her first solo effort titled Hard Core. The album would go on to be RIAA-certified double platinum. The success of this album launched the rappers career and she began recording more records.
The signer also began hitting the road for live performances. Her first major performance was on P. Diddy’s No Way Out tour in 1998. She eventually would go on to headline her own tours after the release of two more critically acclaimed and highly successful albums. The signer also began to have an influence on television, fashion and pop culture. She was the first female rap artist to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and also won a Grammy Award and numerous nominations for her work.
Lil Kim continued to release album after album, proving that she had the ability to withstand the difficult music industry and she eventually cemented herself as a rap and R&B icon. The signer has gone on to work in the fashion world, pen her own book, and even have a Syracuse University English class developed about her and her lyrics. In 2012 she will embark on her biggest headlining tour to date, titled the Return of the Queen Tour, the concert spectacular will take her to numerous venues around the country and will feature songs from her latest album and some of her most popular songs from the past as well.
