The R&B group, New Edition, formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1978 and in a few short years found great success throughout the 1980s. The group is often considered to be one of the first boy bands and for taking part in instigating the boy-band movement of the 1980s and 1990s. Although the group had a few lineup changes throughout their time, they primarily performed as a quintet and recorded mostly contemporary pop, dance and R&B tracks
The group’s main members were Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Ricky Bell. The group of young performers first made their mark on the commercial music industry with singles such as “Mr. Telephone Man,” “Cool It Now” and their first big single “Candy Girl.” Candy Girl was also the titled of the group’s first full album which achieved great chart success in the United States and in the U.K. The band went on to release numerous other records, including the double platinum self titled sophomore album.
The band also began touring and delighted fans all over the world and gaining a great deal of attention from female fans. As one of the era’s first boy bands they also set the precedent for high energy, over-the-top performances that later boy bands were known for. However, even with the success of the group, singer Bobby Brown left the band in 1985 to start his own solo career. The group performed without Brown for several years until they introduced singer Johnny Gill into New Edition in 1998.
After a hiatus for much of the early 1990’s, all six members from the group reunited in 1996 to release the album Home Again. The group also went on tour and since then they have participated in several reunions. In 2011, the group embarked on a 30th anniversary celebration of the release of “Candy Girl.” This reunion would once again feature all six of the members of the group and would take the band on a tour across the country. This tour proved to be a major success for the group and spawned another nation-wide tour to feature their new music and some of their biggest hits. This 2012 tour will last all through the summer of 2012 and will take the band to some of the largest arenas in the country.
