Andrea Bocelli is an Italian operatic singer, songwriter, record producer and multi-instrumentalists who were born in Italy. He was born with bad eye sight, and at the age of 12 years old he went blind after a soccer accident. The instruments he plays include; keyboards, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, harp, harmonica, guitar, drums and melodic.
He has one of the most exciting voices in contemporary opera. Opera is only one side of Andrea’s musical persona, as he is also a pop ballad singer. He has recorded duets with Sarah Brightman, Celine Dion and Eros Ramazzotti. He has also sung with Al Jarreau who praised Andrea as one of the most beautiful voices in the world.
Andrea began learning how to play the piano at the age of six and later learned how to play the flute and saxophone. Later in life, he earned a law, which gave him the ability to pay for his singing lessons.
He got his first break as a singer in 1992, when an Italian rock singer, Zucchero Fornaciari auditioned tenors to record a demo version of Miserere. Andrea successfully passed the audition and he recorded the tune as a duet with Pavarotti.
After the debut of his two albums, Andrea Bocelli in 1994 and Bocelli in 1996, he was able to showcase his operatic singing. His third album, Viaggio Italiano was only released in Italy, sold over 300,000 copies. With the release of his fourth album Romanza in 1997 Andrea rose to superstar status. The album went multi-platinum and included the international hit “Time to Say Goodbye,” which was a duet with Sarah Brightman.
In 1999 his album, Sogno debut featuring a duet with Celine Dion called “The Prayer.” The album sold over ten million copies worldwide. It also earned a Golden Globe Award and led to Andrea’s Grammy nomination as Best New Artist later that year.
Andrea has recorded thirteen solo albums including both pop and classical music, two greatest hits albums and eight complete operas. Combined he has sold over 70 million copies worldwide. He is the biggest selling classical music artist in history.
