During his long and successful career, the American singer, Johnny Mathis has had 73 hits on the Billboard charts and has sold more than 350 million albums world wide. He is noted as being the third most successful recording artist in the United States during the 20th century; after Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra and continues to experience great success with his sales today. After making the decision to choose a singing career over an Olympic tryout for the high jumping team, Johnny Mathias recorded his debut album titled Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song. The album title was spot on as his mixture of jazz, rock and popular music was unlike any other of the time.
After a moderate start in his career, Johnny soon began achieving commercial success with major MGM record contracts, appearances on film and on the Ed Sullivan Show and the acquirement of the nickname, “the velvet voice.” Johnny Mathias truly spent his career living up to that nickname with hit after hit that featured his smooth, unmistakable voice. The singer also set records when five of his albums appeared on the Billboard charts all at the same time. This is a record only Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow have achieved.
Even with nearly 60 years in the music industry, Johnny Mathis is no where near retiring from music and continues to entertain his fans with live performances.
