The rather complex history behind the famed music festival, Lollapalooza, has made this rock n’ roll fest one of the most highly-anticipated and celebrated events in all of music. Lollapalooza is an annual weekend music festival that hosts hip hop artists, punk and metal bands, alternative rock groups and even dancing and comedic performances. Each year, the three-day festival plays host to over 160,000 music fans and numerous live concert performances. Although Lollapalooza was once a country-wide tour, it is now held in Grant Park in Chicago.
Lollapalooza was the brain-child of Jane’s Addiction singer, Perry Farrell. He created the event as a farewell tour for his band. After running from 1991-1997, the festival shut down until it was revived in 2003. At this time the festival toured numerous North American cities, until 2005. That year, Perry Farrell joined forces with the William Morris Agency and Capital Sports Entertainment to redesign the touring festival and give it a permanent home in Grant Park Chicago. The re-crafting of Lollapalooza proved to be a success with tremendous ticket sales in the city and has even spawned an overseas branch of the festival that appeared in Santiago, Chile in 2011.
Every year, some of the biggest names in rock music, including artists like Pearl Jam, The Killers, Lady Gaga, The Strokes and Kanye West come together for the festival. Although musical performances lie at the core of the weekend-long event, Lollapalooza has also shown to be a platform for political groups and non-profits.Even though the festival has taken many forms, Farrell and the other names behind Lollapalooza believe it has found a home in downtown Chicago and that the three-day musical celebration will continue to keep its home in the Windy City.
Those looking to experience Lallapalooza live can buy one day tickets, VIP passes or Travel Packages for the event. The 2012 event will be held August 3-5, and weekend dates will change annually. However, due to the immense popularity of Lollapalooza and the limited number of tickets, three day passes for the festival are known to sell out months in advanced so audiences are encouraged to act quickly if they want to experience all three days of festival events.
