The American rock band the Stone Temple Pilots first came together in San Diego, California in 1986 under the name Mighty Joe Young. After a deal with Atlantic Records and a name change, the band found tremendous success with their debut album Core which was released in 1992. This initial album not only introduced the world to the Stone Temple Pilots but would catapult the groups career and eventually make them one of the most successful bands of the 1990s.
Although they were initially described as a grunge rock band and grouped in with other grunge groups of the time, the Stone Temple Pilots have been known throughout their career for consistently re-imagining their sound. They have taken influences from all types of different music from psychedelic rock, classical rock, hard tock and even bossa nova to create a sound that was entirely their own. The group has sold millions of records world wide, toured the globe to sold out venues of screaming fans and received great critical acclaim. This acclaim includes an MTV Video Music Award, American Music Award and Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. They have continued to receive numerous Grammy Award nominations that have lasted long into their career proving their talents are still able to impress those in the music industry.
As of today, as the Stone Temple Pilots continue to record, perform and garner a great deal of commercial success, the band has already sold more than 40 million records world wide. Their first album Core went eight times platinum and they have had number of albums such as Purple topping the charts as well. Since the group first dissolved in 2003 they had 16 top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts, with eight of those singles peaking at the number one spot. Although they did officially dissolve in 2003 after a hiatus, it was clear that fans of the Stone Temple Pilots were not ready to give up on the band’s music. This caused the group to reform in 2008 and after attempting to take another break in 2011, the group has convinced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Core.
In honor of their wildly successful first album the band released its first ever concert film and launched the Core anniversary tour. The tour will kick off in September 2012 at the Rock Allegiance festival at Hershey Park and take the band to fans around the globe.
