The rock band System of a Down has been finding success in the rock music industry since they first came together in 1994. Among fans, the band has a number of different names, including just “System” or the acronym SOAD. The band’s hard rock sound which mixes traditional rock music with heavy metal rock music to create a sound that has given the band commercial success. In fact they have seen more mainstream commercial success than many hard rock or heavy metal bands today.
Throughout their career, System of a Down has released five full-length studio albums. Three of these albums have debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 charts. Their first album to debut at the top of the charts was the group’s second record, titled Toxicity. The album debuted during the horrific events of September 11th, but didn’t stop the record from achieving great commercial success. Toxicity would go on to achieve multi-platinum certification and sell more than 12 million records world wide.
After a number of successful tours and performances that were generated from the success of Toxicity, System of a Down released Steal This Album! after a number of the band’s songs were leaked on the internet. Then the band went on to release Mezmerize, in 2005, another album with a No. 1 debut and a record that would earn them a Grammy Award for their song “B.Y.O.B.” in 2006. Hot of the heels of Mezmerize, System of a Down released Hypnotize in 2005; and this album again debuted at the number one spot.
Even with all of this success, the group decided to go on hiatus beginning in 2006. When they reunited in 2010 and headed out on their global reunion tour; the band saw that the loyalty of their fans hadn’t faltered and they were welcomed back with great commercial success; proving their sustainability in the industry. After seeing the great success they could still obtain; the band announced a 2012 North American tour. The tour will feature the Deftones as the opening act. The 2012 summer long tour is designed to take the band to numerous cities in the United States and Canada so they can play in some of the world’s largest arenas for their loyal and dedicated fans who are still eager to hear the group’s latest musical creations.
