Widespread Panic History
John Bell used to play guitar as a solo act, when he met Michael Houser at the University of Georgia in 1981. He invited Houser to join him as a guitarist. They started collaborating on music and wrote songs like “Driving Song” and “Chilly Water” together, which are still popular among the youth. In 1984, the duo met the future member Dave Schools, who started playing with them on February 24, 1985, at the A-Frame house on Weymanda Court in Athens. Houser called his childhood friend drummer Todd Nance to perform with the trio for a charity event at Athens in 1986. They performed at the event, calling themselves as Widespread Panic. Later, they added percussionist Domingo S. Ortiz in their band. In 1987, they recorded their first album Space Wrangler, at John Keane's studio. After playing their first show in Colorado in March 1990, they signed with the Capricorn Records in January 1991. When they released their first major label debut, Widespread Panic, Billy Bob Thornton directed the movie Widespread Panic: Live from the Georgia Theatre in that same year only. Another Joyous Occasion (2000) and Don't Tell the Band (2001) marked their first albums of the new millennium. When the band was on their annual summer tour of the States, lead guitarist Michael Houser had to exit the tour. He was suffering from cancer and came back to home. After his death on August 10, 2002, the Widespread Panic continued to go ahead with the permanent guitarist George McConnell as it was the wish of the Houser that the band should carry on after his passing.
