The American indie rock band, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, first came together in New York City in 2000. Quickly after forming, the band began gaining recognition from other groups in the industry and found themselves opening for bands like The Strokes and The White Strips after only a few months together. The group began gaining a following among garage punk music followers. They followed their underground success up with their self-titled debut EP.

The band eventually gained some commercial appeal after being invited to play at the popular music festival South by Southwest and heading out on a nation-wide tour with the group Girls Against Boys. They followed with tour up by opening for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in the U.K. and eventually headlining their own U.K. tour as well; visiting smaller venues across the area. Even with major live success the band still didn’t release a full album until 2003.
Once the group’s debut album, Fever to Tell, was released, they began gaining a great deal of critical acclaim. Their unique sound and the haunting vocals of lead singer Karen O, helped them stand out from other indie bands of the time. The third single, titled “Maps” got a great deal of radio play and was named by Rolling Stones magazine as one of their 500 greatest songs of all time. The band continued to released albums and EPs; and gained a lot of critical acclaim. They also continued to tour throughout Europe and the United States, doing many of their own performances and making numerous festival appearances as well.
Fans across the world have been mesmerized by the group’s live concerts which feature a mixture of high energy performances, and more mellow songs that feature their lead singer’s haunting voice. Fans and critics alike have been unable to describe the trio’s sound, and it has been deemed as everything from edgy, to punk, to dance music and anything in between. The band has received numerous Grammy Award nominations for their work, yet for fans it is their energetic live performances that make the group what they are today. Their live 2012 performances and festival appearances are sure to continue to have fans reeling over the group’s unique sound.
