The English rock band, New Order, first formed in 1980 to create a completely innovative sound of music; determined to add a fresh sound to rock n’ roll. With a style that is often described as a combination of New Wave, rock and electronic music, from the moment fans first heard the New Order sound, it was easy to tell that this was a completely unique take on music. During their time as a group in the 1980s they quickly became critically acclaimed and noted as one of the most influential bands of the decade. Even today, homages to the group’s unique take on electronic music can be seen in modern rock music.
New Order became one of the first bands to truly take influence from the New York City club scene into their music, to create some of the first real dance music of the era. However, the group was always set on reinventing themselves and their style of music and was constantly coming out with new interpretations of their sound. Even their 1983 hit “Blue Monday” which is described by many as their most unique sounding single gave the band great success, even with its departure from their New Wave sound. “Blue Monday” is actually the best selling 12-inch single of all time to date.
While New Order undoubtedly changed the music scene with their minimalistic approach to things such as fashion and album art, they were also the flagship band for Factory Records and are often credited for helping the studio get off the ground. No matter what the band did during the height of their fame during the 1980’s, they were known for adamantly only doing things their way. They became known for having a ‘non-image’ due to their rare public appearances and their refusal to give interviews at most events.
Although the band’s live performances often sold out, they were known for playing very short concert sets and for never appearing for encores. Even with this approach to performing fans still came out in droves to see the group perform, and continue to today. After the group broke up in the late 1980s they came back together again in 1998. Today, even with several line up changes, they still perform in front of hoards of adoring fans waiting to hear the band’s eclectic sound live.
