Barry Manilow is an American singer, songwriter and producer best known for his recordings; “Could It Be Magic,” Can’t Smile without You,” “Mandy” and Copacabana (At the Copa).” He is one of the most successful Adult contemporary entertainers of all time that has been singing and writing since the 60s. Barry was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2002, along with many other awards he has earned over the years.
Barry started showing signs of being a showman as early as the age of five when he recorded a version of “Happy Birthday” with is grandfather for a family member. Years later, he was asked to arrange songs for an adaption of the musical, “The Drunkard,” which became an instant success running Off-Broadway for eight years.
In 1973, he debut his self-titled album includes songs; “Could it Be Magic” and “Cloudburts,” which became instant hits. Since his first release, he has been involved in over 40 albums including his own greatest hits and compilations. Several of his singles, spent a significant amount of time on the charts that included “Mandy,” “Copacabana (At the Copa),” “I Write the Songs” and “Can’t Smile without You.”
In 1978, five of his albums were on the best-selling charts simultaneously and has recorded a string of Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums resulting in being named Radio & Records number one Adult Contemporary Artist. Also, he ended up winning three straight American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/ Rock Male Artist too. Between 1974 through 1979, Barry had ten number one singles, of which five were consecutive hits.
He dominated pop music during the later 70s spinning off 13 hit singles on the adult contemporary charts and platinum albums that essentially made the Arista label. In the early '80s, he branched out into other genres. Barry was free to explore his long-held taste for swing, pop standards, and Broadway show tunes, which dominated his albums from the mid-80s on. He continued to record steadily during the following decades, and his popularity never completely died.
February 2005 through December 2009, he was the headline at the Las Vegas Hilton, performing hundreds of shows before ending his relationship with the hotel. Then, from March 2010, he was headlined at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Over the course of his career, he has sold over 80 million albums worldwide.
