The Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of the most successful rock bands of the 1980s. Their style is a mix of alternative rock, hard rock, punk rock and funk. They have earned multiple Grammy Awards and have sold over 65 million albums while topping the charts with their singles. They were also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
There were few rock bands in the 80s who were able to break down musical barriers and Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of those bands. Their musical style is different and addicting while their stage performance is explosive.
The band started with three high school friends, Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak and Michael Balzary who attended Fairfax High School in California. Hillel and Michael had musical promise with the trumpet and the guitar while Anthony focused on poetry and acting. Hillel taught Michael how to play bass while both encouraged Anthony to put his poetry to music. In 1983, the band became the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Today, the band members are Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer. In 1987, the band released their third album “The Uplift Mofo Party Plan” which made the charts, but it didn’t take long before drug addictions spun out of control and the band would end up losing their guitarist, Hillel Slovak.
The band released their fourth album, “Mother’s Milk,” and started seeing success when the album went Platinum and Gold in the US and Canada. Their singles “Knock Me Down” and “Higher Ground” did the best commercially out of any of their other singles. In 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released their next album, “Blood Sugar Sex Magick” which ended up becoming their most widely known album.
In 1992, the band released even more successful singles; “One Hot Minute,” “Californication,” “By the Way,” “Stadium Arcadium” and “I’m with you.” As years went on, they continued to release more albums earning the band several awards. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have won seven Grammys, sold over 70 million albums worldwide, charting nine singles in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
More recently, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were nominated for Best Rock Band and Best Live Artist by the MTV Europe Music Awards and nominated for the Best Group at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards. Their single, “I’m With you” was also nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Over the years, the band has experienced different challenges whether it was drug use, a death of a band member or making band changes, they have kept the band going. The Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to have explosive and energetic concert performances while releasing more albums.
