The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team is a Division I program for Duke University. The team is located in Durham, North Carolina and play their home games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Cameron Indoor Stadium has a capacity of 9,314 people and was built in 1940. In the team’s tenure at the storied venue, the team holds a 771-150 record there, with a non-conference win streak of 94 games at home. The student section at Cameron Indoor is made up of the “Cameron Crazies,” which is one of the loudest student sections in the country. They were once measured at 121.3 dB, which louder than a jackhammer.
Duke’s team was started in 1906, and since that point have attained a high degree of success. The team’s first all-American came in 1930, and in 1952, Dick Groat became the team’s first National Player of the Year. True success did not come until the team hired Mike Kryzewski in 1980. Since that time, the team has won four National Championships in eleven Final Four appearances. The team’s first National Championship came in 1991, with a team led by Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley, and Grant Hill. The team then followed that up with another National Championship in 1992, making them one of very few schools to win repeat National Championships.
Duke has historically placed many of their players very high in the NBA Draft. The team has featured 78 selections in the draft, including 32 in the first round, and 17 of those were selected in the lottery. The team has featured nine National Players of the Year, and 36 All-Americans. The team’s four National Championships to go along with fifteen Final Fours places them in rarefied air as one of the nation’s top basketball programs.
There are rivalries and there are rivalries, and the one between Duke and North Carolina is the definition of a rivalry game. Since their first meeting on January 24, 1920, the team’s 234 meetings have all been hotly contested matchups. The distance between the two schools, just eight miles down Tobacco Road, as well as each of their national success leads this rivalry to take on a life of its own. North Carolina holds the lead in the season series 132-102, and the Tar Heels have won the last matchup, a decisive win in Durham; however, Duke has won five of the last seven matchups, including twice at the Dean Smith Center.
