Notre Dame Fighting Irish History
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish came into existence in 1887. The team played their inaugural match on November 23, 1887 but unfortunately lost to the Michigan by a score of 8–0. The team earned their first win in the final game of the season. They defeated Harvard Prep by a score of 20–0. Between 1887 and 1899, the Notre Dame set a record of 31 wins, 15 losses and four ties against different opponents ranging from local high school teams to other universities. Another wave of success came in 1909; the Irish defeated the Michigan by the score of 11–3. In 1913 season, Jesse Harper became head coach of the team. He guided the team till 1917. Under him, the team posted a record of 34 wins, five losses, and one tie. This period would also mark the beginning of the rivalry with Army. After some disappointing seasons, Ara Parseghian was appointed as the head coach of the team in 1964. In his first year, the Irish improved their record to 9–1. In the following year, Parseghian's 9–1 squad ended Texas' Southwest Conference record 30 game winning streak in the 1971 Cotton Bowl Classic.
