San Diego State Aztecs History
The San Diego State Aztecs were established in 1921. Initially, San Diego State University was two separate schools. They decided to merge schools in 1921 to form San Diego State College. During the 1921 school year they had their first football game. But the team could not able to play 1943-44 seasons due to the circumstances during WWII. Night games have become a tradition of San Diego State University football team. The first SDSU night game was held on September 25, 1930 at Lane Field. 5,000 fans attended the game and witness the Aztecs defeating the San Diego Marines by a score of 39-0. Since then, over 75% of all Aztec games, home and away, have been played at night. Bill Schutte was named as the head coach of the team in 1947. The team made it to the Pineapple Bowl in 1951and faced the Hawaii. They defeated the Hawaii by the score of 34-13. The San Diego State Aztecs finished the 1993 season with the six victories. They shut out the 2010 season with a record of 9–4 (5–3 MWC) and a 35–14 victory over Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. The San Diego State Aztecs play their home games at Qualcomm Stadium.
