South Carolina Gamecocks History
The South Carolina Gamecocks played their first match in 1908-1909 season but were not competitive till John Blackburn was appointed as the head coach for 1913-1914 season. After posting mediocre records, they showed little improvement under john and posted 5-4-1 record in his first and only season. They experienced their most successful phase under the head coach Frank McGuire, who was hired before the 1964-65 season. He roamed in the sidelines of the Gamecocks for the next sixteen years and took them to great heights as they went undefeated in ACC regular season in 1970, won an ACC Tournament championship in 1971 and gave three consecutive Sweet 16 appearances from 1971 to 1973 season. Their success story does not end here, the South Carolina went 69-16 overall record from 1968 to 1971 season. Under Frank, they won 283 matches against 142 losses. Another wave of success came with Dave Odom, he led the team from 2002 to 2008 season and posted four 20-win seasons during his tenure. They also gave 2004 NCAA Tournament appearance and consecutive NIT championships appearance in 2005 and 2006. The South Carolina Gamecocks play their home games at Colonial Life Arena.
