The Atlanta Hawks are the professional basketball team that hails from Atlanta, Georgia and while they are now associated with the large Southern city, they have had a long and detailed history that has had this team in various cities across the country. The team first developed in 1946 as part of the National Basketball League (NBL) at the time they were known as the Buffalo Bisons. However, after a single season they moved to Moline, Illinois and became the Tri-City Hawks. During this time, in 1949 they became a part of the NBA and two years later moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin as the Milwaukee Hawks. In 1955 the team moved again to become the St. Louis Hawks.
Finally, in 1968 the Hawks made their final move, to Atlanta, Georgia where they still play today. Although it took them several years to find their permanent home the Hawks are now established in the south and are known as one of the biggest teams in the NBA today. They are currently part of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the NBA. The team, who is owned by the Atlanta Spirit plays all of their home games in downtown Atlanta, Georgia in the Phillips Arena. During their time as an organization, the Hawks have had a number of set-backs but always shown to be one of the most resilient teams in the NBA.
They have had great names on their team throughout the years including Doc Rivers, Kevin Williams and most recently Al Horford; often considered as being one of the most important players to the franchise in terms of reviving the organization after a streak of defeats. During their time as an organization the Atlanta Hawks have had four conference titles while in the Western Conference and four division titles as well. They also won one NBA championship. While the team is known for having some issues with the NBA draft throughout the years, the past few years, the Atlanta Hawks have managed to develop some of the most talented squads in the NBA and have shown season after season that the Hawks are a team to be contended with no matter who they match up against in the league.
