Every year, top professional tennis players from around the world head south to the greater Atlanta, Georgia area to participate in one of the biggest professional tournaments in the sport. The tournament, which has been held under many different names, and is commonly referred to as the Atlanta Tennis Championships, was deemed the BB&T Atlanta Open in 2012. The year 2012, also marked another big change for the tournament as it moved to the downtown Atlantic Station venue in Atlanta, instead of being held at one of the city’s suburban tennis courts. The change will allow this already popular tennis tournament to seat 4,000 people at the main court.
When the tournament first started it was held in Indianapolis until moving to Atlanta in 2009, a move that was made to bring in higher ticket sales to the tournament. Along with the change in location, when the tournament was moved in 2009 it also became part of the ATP World Tour 250, a spot it still holds today. The tournament is one of the 40 events held in the 250 series, sponsored through the Association of Tennis Professionals, and is seen as one of the biggest events in the entire tournament.
In addition to its history, the tournament is also known for bringing in some of the biggest names in the sport. The tournament has had past big name winners such as Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and Andy Roddick. Roddick has been a big name in the tournament for many years. He currently holds the record for most wins in mens singles matches and most final appearances in men’s singles as well. In 2012, he also won the tournament for the third time after beating out Gilles Muller. While the singles matches of the BB&T Atlanta Open have been known to bring in some top names and some exciting playoffs, the tournament also has a longstanding history with exciting doubles matches as well.
