The California Indy 400 is a tentative name for an Indy Racing League event that often falls under the name of the Toyota Indy 400 or the INDYCAR World Championships, the latest tentative name for the event. No matter what name fans decide to call it, this event is an Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, USAC and CART Champ Car race that is held in California. Unlike many Indy events, this particular race is not an annual occurrence. It was held from 1970 until 1980 every year and then again from 1997 to 2005. After a few year break the event is slotted to start up again in 2012 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The event was previously a 500 mile event but was changed for a few years to a 400 distance, however, when reinstated in 2012 it was announced that the event would once again be 500 miles.
