Carolina Hurricanes History
The Carolina Hurricanes started their journey of thousand miles in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association. The team became the member of the National Hockey League in 1979. They were renamed as Hartford Whalers. The team played its first game in front of a sellout crowd at the Hartford Civic Center Coliseum on January 11, 1975. They posted three winning season after the merger but were not as successful as they had been in WHL. The team made the playoff appearance in 1986 and won their playoff series but they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the second round. In the following season, the whalers won the division title. In 1992, the Whalers made the playoffs for the final time but could not able to go further in the series. In July 1997, the team moved to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. They were renamed as Carolina Hurricanes. In 2000–01, the team claimed the eight seed and faced the New Jersey Devils in the first round. The team lost the game but their home crowd gave them the standing ovation. The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2005. They play their home games at RBC Center.
