The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional football team in the National Football League. The team is located in Kansas City, Missouri and play their home games at Arrowhead Stadium. Arrowhead Stadium has a capacity of 76,416 and opened in 1972. The team plays in the AFC West division and is currently coached by Romeo Crennel. The team was established in 1960 by Lamar Hunt and was one of the seminal AFL franchises before joining the NFL in the 1970 AFL-NFL Merger.
The team has featured only 12 different head coaches in their franchise’s history, beginning with Hank Stram who was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The team also featured Marv Levy as a coach, who was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Marty Schottenheimer is the team’s most successful coach, having compiled a record of 101-58-1 in his tenure as coach to go along with a 3-7 record in the playoffs. The team has made 16 playoff appearances, most recently in 2010. The team has won eight division titles, most recently in 2010. The team has not won a conference championship but won three AFL Championships including Super Bowl IV, which took place right before the merger.
Fourteen former Chiefs have been enshrined in the Hall of Fame including six who spent their entire careers with the Chiefs. The team has retired the numbers of ten different players: Jan Stenerud, Len Dawson, Emmitt Thomas, Abner Haynes, Stone Johnson, Mack Lee Hill, Derrick Thomas, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, and Buck Buchanan. In the Chiefs’ Hall of Fame, 38 players have been inducted, ranging from Christian Okoye to Fred Arbanas.
While the Chiefs have a number of casual rivalries, few rivalries in the league stack up to the bitterness of the rivalry between the Chiefs and the Raiders. Since their first meeting in 1960, the teams have faced off 106 times. The Chiefs hold the lead in the regular season 53-44-2, as well as 2-1 in the playoffs, including a 41-6 trouncing by the Raiders. The Chiefs are one of only two teams to hold a winning record against the Raiders with more than ten games played against them.
