Kansas City Royals History
The Royals were founded by Ewing Kauffman, a Kansas City businessman. The Royals played their first Major League Game on April 8, 1969. They defeated their opponent Minnesota Twins with 4-3 in 12 innings at Municipal Stadium. The "Royals" name derived from the American Royal, which is a livestock & horse show, and rodeo held annually in Kansas City since 1899. The Royals surprised the world with a strong second place showing under Bob Lemon in 1971. The team quickly became a powerhouse, appearing in the playoffs 7 out of 10 seasons from 1976 to 1985, including one World Championship and another pennant, led by stars such as George Brett, Frank White and Bret Saberhagen. The team remained competitive through the mid-1990s. The Royals won their first division title in 1976. Success followed them in 1985 and they won World Series Championship. During that phase, from owner through the front office to the manager, coaching staff and players on the field, they were considered as the model baseball organization. The Royals have played their home games in Kauffman Stadium since 1973 to the present. The stadium was earlier known as Royals Stadium.
