he NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race, the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 is one of the most well known races in the current NASCAR series and one of the most popular among fans. It is help annually at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. Although Lenox Industrial Tools, a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid, is the official race name Newell Rubbermaid is the actual sponsor of the race and has been the sponsor since 2006.
The race is most commonly known by its nickname as “The Extra Mile at Magic Mile.” The race was given this name after a 2008 addition to the course. Lenox Industrial Tools , added the extra mile as a promotional move to show that their suppliers and tools “go the extra mile.” Despite the fact that the addition was received with mixed reviews and was thought to focus too much on the company instead of the race, the name became popular and well accepted.
Even though this particular race is measured in laps and not miles, the addition worked and caught on among fans and announcers alike. While the race’s length has gone under several changes, so has the date of the event. The race was traditionally held in July, until changes were made to push the race back to mid June as a way to precede the Coke Zero 400, but in 2011, changes were made once again to put the race back to its mid July race date where it is set to remain.
Since the race is measured in laps, it is 300, and since 2008, 301 total laps around the track, instead of being measured in miles like traditional races. The new distance now brings the race in at around 318 miles. Except for a 2008 and 2009 race where the event was called early due to rain, an issue that also occurred in 2008 before the extra lap was added to the event. However, in 2009 once the race was called early, the victory was given to Joey Logan, who became the youngest winner in cup history.
With its unique name and the famous extra lap, the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 has become one of the most watched races in NASCAR today and one that many fans flock to in order to see some of the most exciting races in NASCAR
