The Miami Dolphins are a professional football team in the National Football League. The team is located in Miami Gardens, Florida and play their home games at Sun Life Stadium. Sun Life Stadium has a capacity of 75,540 and opened in 1987. The team plays in the AFC East division and is currently coached by Joe Philbin. Joe Robbie and Danny Thomas established the team in 1966.

Through their tenure, the team has featured only eight full time coaches. Don Shula coached the team from 1970 through 1995, was elected to the Hall of Fame. In his time as coach, he led the team to a 257-196-2 record with two Super Bowl victories, and five AFC Championships to go along with his two Coach of the Year awards. The team has made 22 playoff appearances, most recently in 2008. The team has won their division 13 times, most recently in 2008. The Dolphins have won five conference championships, three of which came consecutively from 1971 through 1973; however, they have not won since Dan Marino’s record-breaking season in 1984. The team has also won two Super Bowls, with those victories coming in 1972 and 1973 under the direction of Shula.
Nine former members of the Dolphins have been inducted into the Hall of Fame including Larry Csonka, Bob Griese, Dan Marino, Don Shula, and five others. Larry Csonka and Jake Scott were named Super Bowl MVP of Super Bowl VIII and VII respectively. The team has retired the numbers of three players: Bob Griese, Dan Marino, and Larry Csonka. Dan Marino is the only member of the Dolphins to ever win the MVP Award, having won it in 1984.
The Dolphins have three major rivals, their division foes the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, and the New England Patriots. The Bills-Dolphins rivalry has been played 92 times with the Dolphins holding a sound 55-36-1 lead. The Dolphins and the Jets have long fought for the division title, with more than 90 meetings between the two squads, the Jets hold a narrow 47-43-1 lead; however, the Dolphins won their only playoff matchup. The Patriots and the Dolphins have faced off 90 times with the Dolphins holding a 49-41 lead; however, the Patriots have won the last four and seven of their last eight meetings.
