Joe Robbie and Danny Thomas established the team in 1966.

Larry Csonka and Jake Scott were named Super Bowl MVP of Super Bowl VIII and VII respectively. The team has retired the numbers of three players: Bob Griese, Dan Marino, and Larry Csonka. Dan Marino is the only member of the Dolphins to ever win the MVP Award, having won it in 1984.
The Dolphins have three major rivals, their division foes the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, and the New England Patriots. The Bills-Dolphins rivalry has been played 92 times with the Dolphins holding a sound 55-36-1 lead. The Dolphins and the Jets have long fought for the division title, with more than 90 meetings between the two squads, the Jets hold a narrow 47-43-1 lead; however, the Dolphins won their only playoff matchup. The Patriots and the Dolphins have faced off 90 times with the Dolphins holding a 49-41 lead; however, the Patriots have won the last four and seven of their last eight meetings.
