The professional NBA basketball team the Miami Heat are one of the youngest teams in the NBA today and have found great success since first joining the league in 1988. When the Miami Heat was added to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1988 they were added on as an expansion team and since then have established themselves as one of the most successful teams in the league. Today, the Miami Heat play in the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference. At their home games, played in Downtown Miami, Florida at the American Airlines arena; fans can see the team play all of their home games and enjoy an appearance from the team’s mascot, Bernie the fireball.
Even though the team is relatively young by NBA standards, they have found a great deal of success in their 24 years as a franchise. They have made the playoffs 16 seasons out of their past 24 seasons. They have had nine division titles while as a team and won three Eastern Conference Championships. They have also won two NBA Championships as a team making them one of the most successful teams from their group of expansion teams. The Miami Heat is known for having one of the most competitive teams in the league year after year and were known for decades for their vicious and highly publicized rivalry with the New York Knicks.
During their time as an organization, the Miami Heat have had a number of highly successful players including Shaquille O’Neal, Brian Grant and Lamar Odom. However, one of the biggest players to be associated with the team and one of the players that is most associated with some of the later success of the Miami Heat is Dwyane Wade. The NBA MVP is often credited for bringing a resurgence to the team since he first joined the organization in 2003. The team has also had other big names and most recently drafted Chris Bosch and LeBron James; who joined Wade in forming the team’s ‘big three’ of players. These players are credited for helping the team win the 2012 NBA finals. With big names like this on the roster and on the list of alumni and with two NBA titles already to their name there is no denying that fans can expect a great deal from the Miami Heat in the years to come as they strive to continue their tradition of excellence in the NBA.
