The Ottawa Senators were established in 1990. They began to play in 1992. The new Senators played their first game on October 8, 1992, in the Ottawa Civic Centre against the Montreal Canadiens. The team defeated the Canadiens with 5–3. The Senators finished last overall for the next three seasons as they followed the strategy of aiming low and securing a high draft position. The team made the playoff appearance in 1996-97 season. The team faced the Buffalo Sabres in the first round and defeated them. In the following season, the franchise finished with their first winning record. The Ottawa Senators won their first playoff series after defeating heavily favored New Jersey Devils. The team finished the 1998–99 season at third place overall with 103 points. This was the first time that the team crossed 100th points mark. In 2000–01 season, the team improved to win their division and placed second in the Eastern Conference. The Sens made it to the playoff in the 2001–02 season and defeated the Philadelphia Flyers. By doing so, the team won their second playoff series. Ottawa had an outstanding season in 2002-03. They finished first overall in the NHL. The team won the Presidents' Trophy. In 2006–07 season, the team finally made it to the Stanley Cup finals after qualifying for the playoffs in nine consecutive seasons.
