Phoenix Coyotes History
The Phoenix Coyotes were established in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets. They were one of the founding franchises in the World Hockey Association. The team won the Avco World Trophy three times and made it to the finals five times out of the sever season of WHL. The Jets were the most successful team of World Hockey League. The team joined the NHL in 1979 after the merger. The team failed to recreate the history in the first two seasons. But they success came to the team quickly. The Jets made 11 playoffs appearances in the next 15 seasons. They finished with the fifth-best record in the league in 1984-85 season. The team moved to Phoenix for the 1996–97 season and they got its current name. The team posted six consecutive .500 and better seasons in Phoenix. In 2000–01 season, they became the first team to earn 90 points and miss the playoffs. The team improved in the following season and earned 95 points. They played their home matches at America West Arena during their first eight years in Phoenix. The team was sold to Phoenix-area developer Steve Ellman in 2001. Gretzky named himself head coach of the franchise on August 8, 2005. The team play their home games at Jobing.com Arena.
