Hailing from Sandy, Utah the American professional soccer club Real Salt Lake is one of the largest professional clubs in the Major League Soccer (MLS) today. The team plays in the Western Conference of the MLS and since their inception in 2004 have been one of the top-ranking teams in the league. After winning the MLS Cup in 2009 and reaching the finals on the CONCACAF Champions League in the following season, they are now recognized as one of the premier teams in their league. They were the first MLS team to ever reach the CONCACAF Champions League Final, although they lost to Monterrey in the final match.
After coming together in 2004, the team had a rough first start to their beginning seasons. With numerous losses and player turnovers plaguing their inaugural season and many of their first seasons, the outlook of the club didn’t look to promising. However, after hard work and the efforts of a solid management team, the club came together to become one of the most winning teams in the league today.
Currently, Real Salt Lake is under the leadership of head coach, Jason Kreis. The team currently plays their home games in Rio Tinto Stadium right outside of Salt Lake City, in the 20,213 person stadium. The team is owned by SCP Worldwide under the supervision of Dave Checketts and Dell Loy Hansen. In the year 2006, Real Salt Lake announced that they were getting a multi-million dollar jersey sponsorship deal with ZanGo. Their other sponsors include Kentucky Fried Chicken and Jet Blue Airways.
The team’s current roster, includes parents from all over the world including Tony Beltran, Nat Borches, Alvaro Saborio and Kyle Beckerman. During their history they have also had some of the MLS’s most recognized players including 2006 MLS Golden Boot winner, Jeff Cunningham, 2009 MLS MVP, Nick Rimnando and 2010 MLS Defender of the Year Jamison Olave. Eddie Pope, Clint Mathis and Jeff Cunningham have also worn the Real Salt Lake jersey during their careers.
In addition to having some of the most successful players in the league on their roster, Real Salt Lake, also has one of the highest attendance records of teams in the league. With fans from all over the world supporting Real Salt Lake they are one of the most followed teams in the MLS in the present league.
