Seattle SuperSonics History
The Seattle SuperSonics were founded in 1967. The team was the member of western division from 1967 to 1970. Then, the team joined the pacific division from the following year and continued playing till 2004. The team became the member of the Northwest division of National Baseball Association in 2004 until 2008. In 1979, the team won the NBA Championship. They are one of the two teams of the six major-league men's professional franchises that existed in Seattle and have won a championship. Since its inception, Sam Schulman owned the team until 1983. In the following year, Barry Ackerly became the owner of the team until 2001. In 2007-08 season, the team relocated to Oklahoma City. The team now plays as the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2006, the team was purchased by Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett. He stated that the Seattle SuperSonics' franchise history will be shared between the Thunder and any future Seattle club. The SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City before the 2008–09 season, following a $45 million settlement with the city of Seattle to pay off the team's existing lease at KeyArena in advance of its 2010 expiration.
