The United States Open Tennis Championships, often known as Flushing Meadows, is one of the most popular and watched hard court tennis tournaments in the professional sport today. This is also one of the oldest and most established professional tournaments in the sport, with the first contest starting back in 1881. Since 1987 the US Open has served as the fourth and final tennis major in the Grand Slam every year. The tournament was originally held on grass courts for nearly 100 years and then moved to clay courts for two years in the 1970s before DecoTurf hard courts were decided on. Every year the tournament gives away millions of dollars in cash prizes as well often making the competition for players even more stiff.
