The United States Women’s National Soccer Team, is a group of women who compete for the United States in international soccer competitions. The team has been and continues to be one of the most successful in the world with a strong history of international play. Their first major victory came in 1991 when the U.S. Women’s National team won the first even Women’s World Cup. During their time as a team, the national team has won the 1999 Women’s World Cup, three Olympic Women’s Gold Medals and eight Algarve Cups.
The team’s 1999 Women’s World Cup victory was seen as one of the biggest highlights in sports during the year and is famed for bringing attention to the women’s sport on a national level. More than 90,000 people attended the event, held in the Rose Bowl, in which the United States defeated China is a shoot out. The event was seen as one of the biggest moments ever in women’s sports. The tournament not only gained more viewers than any other women’s sporting event, but set records when the team was named the Sports Illustrated 1999 Sportspeople of the Year. As of 2012, the current U.S. Women’s team is ranked first in the world by the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.
The team competes in numerous international tournaments the Women’s World Cup and in the Olympics. When not playing as a national team, most players will participate on professional teams in the Untied States. The current coach of the United States Women’s national team is Pia Sundhage; who has been the coach of the team since 2007.
The team’s first actual game was in 1985; when they played in the Mundialtio Tournament under the coaching of Mike Ryan. The team has had some of the biggest names ever in women’s soccer on its roster including Michelle Akers, Mia Hamm, and Brandi Chastain; all of whom played in the 1996 and 1996 major U.S. Women’s soccer Olympic and World Cup victories. The current roster of players, who will be playing in the 2012 Olympics includes big name players such as Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe.
