The Washington Capitals started their journey in 1974 as an expansion team. The Caps did not achieve much success in their first season. After facing few more dreadful seasons, the team hired David Poile as General Manager of the team. He picked Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin. This turned out to be the successful move for the team. These players made immediate impact and blew away the black clouds. The Caps finished at third-place in the powerful Patrick Division and made it to the playoff for the first time in1983. They defeated the Stanley Cup Champion New York Islanders with 3-1. The team gave the playoff appearances for the next 14 years and was considered as the serious contenders in the league. In 1985–86, the Caps finished with 107 points and won 50 games for the first time in franchise history. This became their third best record in the league. The Capitals finished the 2008-09 NHL season with a record of 50-24-8 and scored 108 points. The team won their second consecutive Southeast Division championship. The team moved ahead and beat the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 4-3 but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference semi-finals in seven games. The Caps won the Presidents' Trophy in 2009-10 NHL season. They finished the season with 121 points. The Washington Capitals play their home games at Verizon Center.
