The team currently plays all of their home games at the Verizon Center, a massive multi-purpose arena found in the Chinatown area of Washington D.C. The Washington Wizards have had a long and interesting history in the NBA and it took a number of big changes within the franchise to get the Washington Wizards to where they are today. The team first formed back in 1961 and at the time were based in the city of Chicago and known as the Chicago Packers. A year later they changed their name to the Chicago Zephyers but then the following season were moved across the country to Baltimore, Maryland.
While in Maryland, they were known as the Baltimore Bullets for a full decade until their name was changed to the Capital Bullets in the 1970s. They eventually moved down the road from Baltimore to neighboring Washington D.C. where they were the Washington Bullets. However, due to the negative connotation of the name, they changed to the Washington Wizards in 1997; and the name has stuck. The Wizards, however, still have their midwest roots from their D-league affiliates; the Iowa Energy.
During their time as an organization the Washington Wizards have won one NBA Championship. They have also won seven different division titles and four different conference titles. All of these accomplishments took place in the 1970s. Although they have yet to reach their former dominating status within the league the Washington Wizards have consistently been a powerhouse in the NBA and had some of the greatest players in the league on their team, meaning fans can expect a great deal from the future of this organization.
