The Boston Celtics are the premier NBA (National Basketball Association) team from the city of Boston, Massachusetts. During their time as an organization this team has risen to the top of the league and is now known as one of the most winningest teams in professional basketball. The Boston Celtics are currently members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the NBA and are owned by Boston Basketball Partners LLC. The Boston Celtics were founded in 1946 and since then the team has gone on to win 17 NBA Championships; more than any other NBA franchise in the league.
Fans of the Boston Celtics can see the team play live when they host their home games at the TD Garden; a downtown basketball arena that the team shares with the city’s NHL team the Boston Bruins. During their time as a team, the Boston Celtics have been largely known for their American-Irish association. The team is often characterized by their green uniforms and their Irish or leprechaun themed gear and mascots. The team’s official mascot is “Lucky the Leprechaun” who pays homage to the team’s Irish heritage as well as homage to the largely Irish-American population in the city of Boston.
During their long and impressive history as an organization the Boston Celtics have not only set records within the NBA but they have also found a place in professional sports history as well. Beginning in the 1957 season lasting through the 1969 season, the Boston Celtics won 11 NBA championships in just 13 years. This was not only a record in terms of the NBA but was the longest consecutive streak of any professional sports team in all of North America. During that time the team also coined the term “the big three,” which at the time included Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. Decades later a new “Big Three” would form in Boston Celtic when Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce came together in the 2007-2008 season and the trio began a resurgence in the city of Boston and the team once again began dominating the league.
